Rolling Mist
Looking down the Singel, Amsterdam as low mist rolls over the canal water on a cold autumn afternoon. Looking down the Singel, Amsterdam as low mist rolls over the canal water on a cold autumn afternoon. The atmosphere and slightly reflected rainbow colours in the mist led to an approach emulating the romantic free-style of William M. Turner. In this piece, I captured the ethereal dance of light and mist, painting with passionate brushstrokes to evoke the tranquility of a hazy morning. The oils blend softly, creating a dreamscape that invites contemplation and serenity, a whisper of time standing still. It’s an emotional journey through the senses, a serene tableau that will imbue any space with an essence of peaceful reflection. The atmosphere and slightly reflected rainbow colours in the mist led to an approach emulating the romantic free-style of William M. Oudeschans
My take on the much-painted Montelbaanstoren; built in 1516 as part of the Walls of Amsterdam for the purpose of defending the city and the harbour. I’ve captured the vibrant essence of a bustling waterside, infused with the dynamism of life and the tranquility of nature coexisting. I employed a fervent play of oil colors, and my strokes carry the weight of emotions, embracing impressionism to evoke a sense of movement and liveliness. It’s an artwork brimming with life, intended to add a spirited atmosphere to any space, allowing the viewer to embark on a serene yet spirited journey without leaving home.

Scheepvaarthuis/Shipping House
A painting of a section of the rooftop of one of Amsterdam’s most iconic buildings. In the style of the Amsterdam School (inspired by the Art Nouveau movement) in 1912 architect Van der Mey was appointed by six shipping companies who had joined forces to build a shared head office, intended to exude splendour and strength, from where they can sell tickets for voyages by sea to the Dutch East Indies, Africa and other destinations. This well adorned building is now the 5 star Grand Hotel Amrath.

Fietsers Te gast
In this vivid tapestry of brushstrokes, I channel the energy of the bustling city life. With it’s radiant colors this is an impressionist celebration of the charming chaos where every corner hums with stories untold. A personal favorite scene of sunset through the Raamsteeg, between Spuistraat and the Singel canal, Amsterdam. Fietsers Te Gast (loosely scribbled on a sign in the painting) means that cyclists (in this case) must act cordially to the pedestrians, in a city where cyclists rule.

Grimburgwal
In my creation, I’ve poured vibrant emotions into each stroke, utilizing oils to capture light dancing off the water and the architectural aura. An close look impression of one of the tight squeezes when boating in Amsterdam, going under the bridge from the Rokin towards the university. This piece, in true impressionist fashion, evokes the essence of a tranquil moment, inviting the viewer to pause and soak in a serene, yet lively narrative with historical whispers. It will bring an atmosphere of reflective energy to any space, igniting a dialogue between past and present.

Just the One/Eentje dan
Cafe ‘t Monumentje (& de Blaffende Vis). Jordaan – Amsterdam. A typical ‘Brown cafe’ as they say here. A local is the haunt of artists, writers and such on one side of the street and young professionals on the other. In this oil painting, I’ve captured the vibrant essence of city life. Using the impressionist style, I’ve brought out the bustling energy and casual everyday elegance. There’s a palpable warmth in the sunlight that bathes the buildings, while the vivacious street scene pulses with life. This artwork is a celebration of those fleeting, beautiful moments that compose our daily existence, meant to add a touch of lively charm to any space.

In answer to an often-asked question;
I have painted outside, but find it is seldom without it’s drawbacks.
It is full of distractions, the pesterings of man or beast
and the ever-changing sky and shadows.
Therefore I take my own photos for reference, only occasionally make sketches and conduct them (often from accumulated reference) in my studio.
Many of my viewing positions are also rather difficult to paint from.
What is more; oil paints simply do not dry quickly enough for the spontanuety of the scenes I wish to capture. Trusty little camera at my side …
In the end I render them as loosely as if I were sketching that moment,
in all it’s glory, in full colour.
