For these impressions built up from lightfall I mostly steer clear of black and layer the colour spectrum to create three-dimensionality. What appears as black on these small resolution images is more-often in fact dark blue or brown. Seen in real life they appear less contrasting and the reds are not as bright. From close up they appear (and are) very loosely painted. As you move from close to further back the eye merges the colours to a greater sense of depth and the paintings become more realistic.

In answer to an often-asked question; I have painted outside, but find it is seldom without it’s draw-backs, so I take my own photos for reference and only sometimes make sketches. Some of my viewing positions are also rather difficult to paint from. Painting in oil colours can take a while to fully complete. I therefore, like other artists, work on a group at a time in my studio.
