Scheepsvaarthuis/Shipping House

In the style of the Amsterdam School (inspired by the Art Nouveau movement) in 1912 architect Van der Mey was appointed
by six shipping companies who had joined forces to build a shared head office, intended to exude splendour and strength, from where they can sell tickets for voyages by sea to the Dutch East Indies, Africa and other destinations.Prins Hendrikkade sits close to Oostelijke Handelskade, the quay where ships docked and departed from.
This well adorned building is now the 5 star Grand Hotel Amrath.

For these impressions from light I steer clear of black and layer the colour spectrum to create three-diminesionality.
Seen in real life, the eye merges these colours into a realistic sense of depth, as you move from close to further back.
From close up they appear (and are) very loosely painted.
Paintings in oil colours can take a while to fully complete, so I work on a group at a time in my studio.
They are individually built up as one scene from a number of photos and (time permitting) sketches or watercolour studies

The works that follow are sold or no longer in my possession.
